From the Primary Care Alliance

The Primary Care Alliance (PCA) is excited to introduce its new Chair, Dr. Emmanuel Gye. Dr. Gye is a family physician and lifestyle medicine specialist with a practice in Airdrie at the Alberta Bariatric & Lifestyle Clinic, which has been serving the community for over 10 years. Dr. Gye also holds an academic position as a Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of Calgary, where he is involved in training medical students and residents. Additionally, Dr. Gye serves as an executive member of the Alberta Medical Association’s Section of Family Medicine in the Secretary-Treasurer role.

In the past, Dr. Gye was a member-at-large of the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) Canadian Prairie Board, and Chair of the Highland Primary Care Network in Alberta. 

With extensive experience and a deep passion for innovation and collaboration, Dr. Gye is committed to making a difference and advancing primary care in Alberta. He believes in the power of partnership and aligning groups to amplify the impact of primary care voices in the healthcare system. As a physician leader, Dr. Gye is inspired by the potential opportunities for Alberta to lead the way in transforming primary care. In particular, he is an avid learner and early adopter of technology that enables virtual and remote care for his patients. 

In his leisure time, Dr. Gye likes to spend time cycling, golfing, travelling, and volunteering for various community development initiatives in Canada and West Africa.

The ACFP honours MacEwan University Health Centre
 
On October 17, 2023, the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) presented MacEwan University Health Centre (MUHC), an Edmonton-based multi-disciplinary teaching clinic, with the 2023 Patient’s Medical Home Outstanding Family Practice Award.

This award recognizes excellence in family practice.

The AMA Accelerating Change Transformation Team (ACTT) offers a number of courses available online through the Learn@AMA platform.

Acting SFM president appointed 
The Section of Family Medicine Executive has announced that Dr. Sarah Bates has been appointed as the Acting President. This appointment follows the October 16 resignation of Dr. Jon Hilner from the role. Dr. Bates will remain in place as Acting SFM President until the regularly scheduled AGM on September 19, 2024. 
Dr. Bates is a family physician who practices longitudinal family medicine at the Central Family Medicine Teaching Clinic in Calgary and is a clinical assistant professor for the Department of Family Medicine, Cummings School of Medicine. Dr. Bates has worked closely with the AMA and the Section of Family Medicine, including serving as a representative forum delegate for SFM and on the board of directors from 2009 to 2016. She has a long history of championing the importance of full-scope family practice and brings an in-depth understanding of the escalating crisis in family medicine to her role as acting president of SFM.

Poison and Drug Information Service (PADIS) Conference
The PADIS clinical toxicology conference, organized by AHS and the University of Calgary, takes place November 4 at the Cumming School of Medicine’s Health Science Centre. The line-up includes keynote speaker Dr. Jon Cole from the University of Minnesota, as well as talks on street drugs, household toxins, managing poisonings in remote areas, and more.
The conference is in-person and has a registration fee, but there is a recording-only option.

35th Annual Cardiovascular Update - November 18
The Cardiovascular Update is a one-day course providing participants with practical and up-to-date information on the management of cardiac problems. Participants will engage in a combination of interactive case-based workshops, presentations, as well as opportunities to network with colleagues and faculty. Participants include urban and rural primary care physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners and allied health professionals.
