Alberta Health update on tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine
As of July 1, 2024, adults can receive routine doses of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine from a pharmacy. In addition, fully immunized adults who present with tetanus-prone wounds can be referred to a pharmacy if only a Tdap booster is required.

However, adults with tetanus-prone wounds, who have an unknown immunization history or incomplete tetanus immunization series, should be referred to Alberta Health Services (AHS) Public Health where tetanus immune globulin (TIG) is available. All children requiring a tetanus-containing vaccine, either routinely or for wound management, should continue to be referred to AHS Public Health to ensure they receive the age-appropriate tetanus-containing vaccine. Tdap vaccine distribution to medical clinics is expected to resume this fall.

Updated Routine Immunization Schedule
Immunization remains one of the most effective methods to protect individuals, families, and communities from certain serious diseases. While some vaccines confer lifelong immunity, others require booster doses to maintain their protective effects.

Alberta’s updated routine immunization schedule is designed to provide optimal protection by administering vaccines at the most effective ages and stages of life. This approach ensures the development of lasting immunity.

Healthcare professionals can refer to the immunization schedule organized by age or stage, and access the comprehensive schedule for a quick overview.
