Primary Care Alberta Clinical Updates - September 11, 2025
Enhancements to summative documents delivery in Connect Care
Starting September 11, 2025, Connect Care is giving authors of summative documents (inpatient notes) greater control over how these notes are routed. Authors will be able to:
  • View all automatic recipients
  • Add additional providers as needed
  • Choose delivery methods (eDelivery, fax, mail or In Basket)
  • Send a broader range of inpatient note types, including sensitive ones.
As a result of these improvements, automatic routing of some documents to authors will no longer be needed; authors can include themselves as recipients.
Note: All inpatient notes, including discharge summaries and ED Provider Notes, will continue to be automatically routed to the patient’s primary care provider (PCP) to support continuity of care.

Perianal Disease clinical pathway
Looking after patients with hemorrhoids or anal fissures? Use the Provincial Perianal Disease Primary Care Clinical Pathway on Alberta's Pathway Hub for clear, step-by-step guidance. This clinical pathway:

  • Addresses all grades of hemorrhoids and anal fissures.
  • Highlights key assessments and investigations, emphasizes the importance of conservative management over a six-week period and provides guidance on when a referral to specialty care would be indicated.
  • Includes considerations for colon cancer screening and trauma-informed care, and offers links to other relevant clinical pathways.

An accompanying patient pathway is also available on MyHealth Alberta: Your Journey with Perianal Disease. This pathway mirrors the clinical pathway and provides information to help patients address whole-person health considerations.

Respiratory Virus Dashboard adds RSV severe-outcomes view
Alberta’s interactive Respiratory Virus Dashboard now includes data on RSV severe outcomes, in addition to data on influenza and COVID-19. Primary care providers may want to use this information as part of their patient panel planning. Content is updated weekly.

Lab bulletin: Cystic fibrosis and CFTR testing updated
Molecular genetic testing for cystic fibrosis and CFTR-related disorders has been updated to include 139 pathogenic variants in the CFTR gene as the first tier of testing. Criteria for full gene analysis and the polyT tract reporting policy have also been updated.
