AMA President Dr. Brian Wirzba's Inaugural Address
 

This is a time for continuity, not pause. For continued forward momentum, not retreat. We are all acutely aware of the disruption and uncertainty in Alberta’s health care system right now. Government reforms have created confusion at a time when our patients and our profession desperately need clarity, stability and a coherent plan.

Throughout these changes, the AMA has been calling for informed health system reforms. Our system needs more than just restructuring, we need a system that is integrated and collaborative at its core.

Agenda
 

The AGM began at 6:30 p.m. with Speaker Dr. Steven Congly welcoming attendees and outlining the meeting agenda.

In Memoriam
 

The Alberta Medical Association respectfully honours the members who have passed away since our last AGM (page 36), recognizing their service, dedication, and lasting impact on the medical community.

Report from the Board and Forum
 

Dr. Shelley Duggan, AMA Immediate Past President shared the Report from the Board and Forum reflecting on the past fiscal year. Her remarks highlighted a period of intense change, strategic wins and ongoing challenges in Alberta’s health care system. She emphasized the AMA’s commitment to transparency, member engagement and physician-led advocacy amid a complex and shifting political landscape. 


Key achievements included: 

  • Rollout of the Primary Care Compensation Model.
  • Landmark arbitration outcome for cancer care physicians.
  • Strengthened public health advocacy. 

Dr. Duggan also addressed the AMA’s evolving role in negotiations, modernization efforts and government relations -- underscoring the importance of unity, evidence-based leadership and readiness for the year ahead. View the AMA’s 2024-25 Annual Report.

Committee Reports
 

Reports were presented and supported by membership including:  

  • Committee on Bylaws – Dr. Carl Nohr, Chair (page 37).  
  • Committee on Financial Audit – Dr. Heather La Borde, Chair (page 47).
  • Nominating Committee – Dr. Mindy Gautama, Chair (page 41).

Elections & Nominations
 

The AGM included a call for nominations to the AMA Nominating Committee. Members will elect:

  • Two members for two-year terms (2025–27)
  • Two alternates for one-year terms (2025–26)

One advance nomination was received: Dr. Victor Do and nominations received at the AGM included:

  • Dr. Franco Rizzuti – Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Calgary
  • Dr. fred Rinaldi – Family Medicine, Medicine Hat
  • Dr. Carl Nohr – General Surgery, Medicine Hat

Nominees will submit a Letter of Interest, and an e-vote will open within the next week. Voting is limited to AGM attendees with voting rights, and positions will be awarded based on vote totals.
