20 medical students received
ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grant

The ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grant was established in 2000 to help AMA medical student members defray the high costs of attending medical school in Alberta. The grant is sponsored by ADIUM Insurance Services Inc., AMA’s wholly owned insurance agency. Each year 20 student names are randomly drawn (10 for each school) from entries received for a $500 grant.

Similar to 2020, in 2021, no one was permitted to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With input from the AMA Committee on Student Affairs, ADIUM randomly selected the 20 AMA student members from the classes of 2022 and 2023 to receive the grants.

Help us improve the AMA website?

We are changing to serve you better.

The AMA is updating its website and we are seeking volunteers to participate in a visioning exercise. This work will help determine the look, organization and functionality of the future AMA website.

Successful applicants will participate in one of two sessions (July 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or July 7 from 1 to 3 p.m.) where they will help us envision the future of albertadoctors.org. Applicants will also have an opportunity to attend a presentation of the final vision and provide feedback at various touchpoints throughout the project. An honorarium will be paid.

We’re looking for a diverse range of voices from varying stages of career, background, practice and location. If you are interested, please contact webmaster@albertadoctors.org by Monday, July 4 with your name, contact information and a short paragraph detailing your background and interest.

We look forward to your feedback!

Referral and consultation improvements between primary and specialty care

Beginning this summer, changes are coming to referral and consultation processes in Alberta. For the past several months, primary and specialty care champions have been co-designing a number of process and program improvements.

What can you expect to see over the next two years?

Notes and notifications help prevent patients from falling through the cracks

You may have noticed new patient reports coming directly to your EMR. Alberta Health Services has initiated a change and clinics enabled on eDelivery are now receiving Summative Notes documents in their EMR.

Summative Notes are sent via eDelivery within hours of their creation. Discharge Summaries in particular, may be updated at a later date with new information. When this happens, they will be re-sent so the current version is on file. Because of this, you may see multiple versions of the Discharge Summaries in your EMR inbox.

What are some key things to remember?

Survey Corner

Health care partners and other organizations often seek physician feedback through surveys. This month, the following is available for your consideration:

Are growth charts useful in communicating child growth to parents?
Researchers at the Universities of Calgary and Alberta invite family physicians to share their thoughts on the utility of growth charts as tools to communicate child growth information and educate parents. Participants can win prizes including Apple store and coffee gift cards. Study approved by the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board: REB20-0637_REN1.

Help support family caregivers
If you’re a family physician caring for patients with chronic illness, disability or frailty, please take five minutes to complete a survey coordinated by the University of Alberta’s Caregiver Centered Care team. Survey results will inform the development and delivery of educational sessions for family physicians in supporting family caregivers.
