New Tracked Prescription Program (TPP Alberta) pad prescribing exemptions

Effective September 2, 2026, new TPP Alberta prescription pad exemptions will come into effect for prescribing TPP-monitored Type 1 medications in specific scenarios within acute care facilities and Recovery Alberta Opioid Dependency Program (ODP) clinics. The change supports safer, more efficient prescribing by reducing duplicate entry and transcription errors.

What is changing?

The TPP Alberta Steering Committee meeting has agreed to provide TPP pad exemptions to inpatient discharges from acute care facilities using Connect Care and Recovery Alberta ODP clinics. See full exemption details here.

All prescribers must still be registered with TPP Alberta to prescribe TPP-monitored Type 1 medications, and prescribers should keep a physical TPP pad available if Connect Care is unavailable.

Section of Chronic Pain

Billing Tip

The AMA Section of Chronic Pain’s mandate is to advocate for physicians who treat patients with chronic pain and who are members of the Section.

The billing codes for Chronic Pain, specifically 03.08F, are considered legacy codes. As a result, the Economic Section of the AMA is planning to review and update the billing codes.

We recommend that anyone in Alberta who uses the 03.08F billing code consider joining the AMA Section of Chronic Pain as either an Active Member or Associate Member. Membership will help you stay informed and updated on this important issue, as well as other matters affecting physicians who provide chronic pain care.

Seeking family physician input on Bill 11 (expansion of private insurance in Alberta)

You are invited to participate in a research study examining Alberta family medicine physicians' and resident physicians' perspectives on the expansion of third-party private insurance within the provincial funding model, as proposed by the Government of Alberta’s passage of Bill 11.

Study Details:

What: A brief, completely anonymous online survey.
Time: Approximately 10 minutes.

Support for conference and publication costs

The Section of Infectious Diseases began accepting applications on July 1 for two funding programs:

Publication Fees Assistance Program: Offers up to six annual awards (totalling $3,000) to support research publication fees. Open to members in good standing, with one grant per member per year. Preference is given to major clinical physicians and early career physicians (≤7 years in practice).
CME Financial Support Benefit: Provides up to four annual awards (totalling $2,000) to cover registration fees for local, national or international conferences. Open to members in good standing, with one grant per member per year. Priority is given to those who haven’t received the award before, major clinical physicians, early career physicians and those presenting research or case reports.

Section of Respiratory Medicine

AMA Respiratory Medicine Travel Scholarship: Apply by August 31

Know a resident physician training in respiratory medicine? Applications for the AMA Respiratory Medicine Travel Scholarship close August 31, 2026.

The Section of Respiratory Medicine established this scholarship to support trainees travelling, particularly internationally, to complete electives focused on observing and learning unique skills within respirology. Between one and three scholarships in an amount of up to $3,000 CAD per scholarship will be awarded annually.

Eligibility criteria

Active, current AMA member
Member of the AMA Section of Respiratory Medicine
Trainee in respiratory medicine
Applicants for international electives will be given priority
Applicants for upcoming or future travel electives will also be given priority; however, we will consider applications for travel electives that have already been completed
Provide one reference from either a current or former preceptor
