Starting July 1, Alberta seniors will be eligible for a 25% discount on driver’s medical examinations. The discount will be provided by
Alberta registry offices as a reimbursement. This means that seniors who took a driver’s medical examination from
April 1, 2024 to date may be asking for a receipt that includes this
information from their practitioner. To obtain the 25 per cent discount, seniors will be required to
present a receipt issued by their practitioner that outlines the following: - type of service provided
- senior’s name
- date of service
- physician’s details (e.g., clinic, address,
phone number)
- amount paid for the service
As part of the programs auditing practice for seniors’ discounts for
driver’s medical examinations, Motor Vehicles Registries Administration may
also be contacting practitioners to validate receipt details of the
examination. A driver’s medical examination is a routine examination performed by
a physician or nurse practitioner to ensure a person is medically fit to drive
according to provincial guidelines. After completing and paying for a driver's
medical examination at a physician’s office, seniors can present proof of their
examination purchase at any registry agent location. The reimbursement, in the
form of a government-issued cheque, will be mailed to the senior’s address on
file usually within 10 business days. Driver’s medical examinations performed
on or after April 1, 2024 will be eligible for the discount as long as proof of
payment is provided to a registry agent. Though the cost of driver’s medical examinations remains uninsured
and not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, the amount
physicians in Alberta charge seniors for the exam is expected to reasonably
reflect physicians’ professional costs, administrative costs and the patient’s
ability to pay. For more information on the seniors’ discount on
