Three new enhanced skills programs taking on their first residents in July 2025
The Department of Family Medicine (DFM) of the University of Calgary launches three new Enhanced Skills programs which will take on their first residents in July 2025.

Sexual and Reproductive Health Program under the leadership of Dr. Rabiya Jalil.
In response to gaps in the health of sexual and gender minorities, this residency program is designed to provide required learning experiences in sexual health; LGBTQIA2S+ health; pelvic health; care of patients that have experienced sexual violence; and menopause and mid-life. Other elective experiences can include inpatient and outpatient experiences in pregnancy options; obstetrics including low risk and specialty care; infertility care; menopause care; infectious diseases and HIV care; perinatal mental health; breast health; and sexual function. This one-year program offers one residency position.

Chronic Pain Program led by Dr. Ted Findley.
The Chronic Pain Enhanced Skills program will prepare the family physician for practice and leadership in the rapidly evolving field of pain medicine, to support the 1-in-5 patients afflicted with this condition. The graduate will be prepared to lead interdisciplinary teams in specialized pain programs, with a focus on non-interventional pain management, but with exposure to and awareness of interventional options. While based at the Calgary Chronic Pain Centre, the resident will also work in partner programs in Calgary, with the opportunity for elective rotations elsewhere. This one-year program has one residency spot available.

Lethbridge Emergency Medicine Program championed by Dr. Charles Wong in collaboration with the Lethbridge EM team, Dr. Stephanie Brass and Dr. Sean Wilde. The University of Calgary CCFP-EM (Lethbridge) program is a comprehensive CCFP-EM program developed to meet the needs of Southern Alberta's regional and rural EDs. This one-year program will recruit two fully qualified family medicine graduates (including in-practice physicians and graduating R2s) into the program each year. The express purpose of this program is to prepare graduates to service the southern AB community. Therefore, the majority of the program will take place in Lethbridge and related-sites, with a few rotations and teaching activities taking place with the CCFP-EM residents in Calgary.

The expansion of Enhanced Skills programs is DFM's commitment to contribute to addressing service gaps for diverse, underserved and remote patient populations.

Recruitment of first residents into these programs commences through the Fall 2024 search and selection cycle.
