AMA President Dr. Heidi Fell's

Inaugural Address

The pace and scale of change within our health system is relentless. Fortunately, in a world where things are consistently inconsistent, the AMA is the constant that keeps our profession focused on the work that needs to be done, just as we have for more than 120 years.

The new 2026-2029 Master Agreement has been approved by members, including both meaningful gains and important issues that remain unresolved. It is not perfect but it will provide stability and a framework to work constructively.

Over the coming year, AMA will continue to do what we do best: bring forward practical solutions, advocate for clarity and ensure that physicians' experience is reflected in decisions shaping care. While we will not always agree on every organizational decision, policy or political question, every member’s perspective deserves to be heard and respected. Our diversity is our strength, and it makes our association more informed, more representative and more effective.

I step into the role of president with tremendous confidence in Alberta’s physicians. The wisdom, experience and passion you bring to your patients, your profession and the health care system mean we are ready for whatever lies ahead.

Report from the Board and Forum

Dr. Brian Wirzba, AMA Immediate Past President, presented the Report from the Board and Forum, reflecting on a year of significant change across Alberta's health system and the AMA's continued work to support physicians, patients and the profession.

His remarks highlighted physician leadership in health-system reform, ongoing efforts to modernize compensation and practice supports, advocacy on key public policy issues and continued investments in strengthening the AMA's capacity to serve members.

Key achievements included:

  • Advancing compensation modernization and sustainable practice models
  • Ensuring physician perspectives helped shape health system transformation and legislative change
  • Expanding advocacy and public engagement on issues including public health, disability supports, Indigenous health and evidence-informed care

Dr. Wirzba emphasized that these accomplishments were made possible through the contributions of physicians across Alberta who participated in AMA governance, committees, negotiations, advocacy and member engagement activities. While significant challenges remain, he noted that the past year demonstrated the impact of a united physician voice working to improve care for patients and support the medical profession.

Members are encouraged to explore the AMA's 2025-26 Annual Report, now available in both PDF and a new online format designed to make it easier to explore the stories, achievements and physician-led impact of the past year.
