Learn more about lung cancer in never-smokers

Cancer Care Alberta (CCA) has developed new content on their Community & Primary Care Provider website to help physicians recognize the signs, symptoms and risk factors for lung cancer. As the incidence of lung cancer in never-smokers (LCINS) is increasing and it is often not diagnosed until it is advanced, CCA has also included specific information about LCINS so it can be detected earlier.

Mobile mammography services: August & September
 
Primary Care Alberta’s Screen Test program will be at the following locations to provide screening mammograms to eligible individuals aged 45 to 74:
  • Coronation: Coronation Hospital and Care Centre, 5000 Municipal Road, Aug. 19-22.
  • Fairview: Fairview Health Complex, 10628 110 St, Aug. 19-22 & 24-28.
  • Castor: Castor Community Hall, at 4801 48 Ave, Aug. 24-26.
  • Hythe: Hythe Legion, 9819 100 Ave, Aug. 29 & 31, Sept 1 & 2.
  • Standoff: Standoff Clinic, Aug. 31-Sept. 2, and Levern Clinic, Sept. 3.
  • Bassano: Bassano Health Centre, 608 5 Ave E, Sept. 4, 5 & 8.
  • Valleyview: Valleyview Health Centre, 43 East Highway St., Sept 3-5 & 8.
  • Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation: Sturgeon Lake Health Centre, Sept. 9.
  • Mînî Thnî: Stoney Health Centre parking lot, 1 Mînî Thnî Road, Sept. 9-10.
  • Fox Creek: Fox Creek Health Care Centre, 600 3rd Street, Sept. 10-11.
  • Vegreville: St. Joseph’s Hospital, 5241 43 Street, Sept. 12 & 14-19.
  • Siksika: Siksika Health & Wellness Centre, Sept. 21-24.
Screening is available at no cost for eligible individuals, but appointments are required.

Lab bulletin (Edmonton suburban hospitals): Changes to sample transport for ammonia testing

Effective Feb. 19, if ammonia is ordered at an acute care site that does not perform testing onsite, samples will be frozen and sent on scheduled couriers. This is a change from being automatically sent by stat transportation, and applies to Edmonton area suburban hospitals. A list of impacted sites is available in the lab bulletin. If results for ammonia are required stat at the impacted sites, please contact the laboratory to request stat transportation.
