Optimized Prescribing with Seniors: Managing falls

Case
JD is a 72-year-old woman who lives alone in her own home. She presents to you in clinic with a history of frequent falls and in the last three months has fallen three times. Her last fall was a week ago and she presented in the emergency department with bruising of her left leg and left hip pain. No fracture was seen.

Issue
Falls are common in older adults and can result in injuries, increased ED visits and hospitalizations. Falls among older adults are a public health issue in Canada.

Optimized Prescribing with Seniors is a joint communication of the Alberta Medical Association and the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta. Articles are written by physicians for physicians prescribing in the care of older patients.

Physician leaders wanted!

The Alberta Medical Association is seeking qualified physicians to contract for the casual position of ACTT Physician Lead. This is a dedicated pool of physician leaders who support the creation of a high-performing health system.

All physicians, both family medicine and non-family medicine specialists, are invited to apply!

You will gain leadership experience and improve your ability to inspire, influence, collaborate and manage change. Review the opportunity.

Email RFP@albertadoctors.org with any questions.

20 medical students each granted $500 courtesy of AMA's ADIUM Insurance

This past June, ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grants were awarded to 20 Alberta medical students who traveled to complete required medical electives over the last year.

The ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grant was established in 2000 to help AMA medical student members defray the high costs of attending medical school in Alberta. The grant is sponsored by ADIUM Insurance Services Inc., AMA’s wholly owned insurance agency. Each year 20 student names are randomly drawn (10 for each school) from entries received.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients and thank you to everyone who applied!

Portfolio positioning as the Bank of Canada cuts rates first

Sponsored article

The Bank of Canada (BoC) is the first G7 central bank to cut rates, with other central banks likely to follow. Further cuts are likely in 2025 as the monetary policy rate is repositioned toward neutral (estimated by the BoC to be in the range of 2.25 - 3.25%). However, the pace of these cuts will be increasingly influenced by policy decisions from the U.S. Federal Reserve. Learn more about what this means for you and your portfolio.

Patient questions, concerns and myths about vaccines

Physician responses to this survey will be used to gather information on their experience with their patients. The responses will be gathered and reviewed by the Vaccines Resource Committee and used to provide an evidence-based resource for physicians when discussing vaccines with their patients and answering their questions.

The survey takes 10 minutes to complete and closes at midnight, July 26.
