Micro-aggression training for physicians launches

Over the past few months, the AMA, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta and Alberta Health Services have collaborated on a new online training course for Alberta’s physicians on micro-aggressions.

The course launched on June 14 and is available to all regulated members through the myCPSA virtual learning platform.

Why focus on micro agressions?

Medical students receive a boost from

AMA's ADIUM Insurance!

Twenty ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grants of $500 were randomly awarded to Alberta medical students who travelled to complete required medical electives over the last year.

The ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grant was established in 2000 to help AMA medical student members defray the high costs of attending medical school in Alberta. The grant is sponsored by ADIUM Insurance Services Inc., AMA’s wholly owned insurance agency. Each year 20 student names are randomly drawn (10 for each school) from entries received.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients and thank you to everyone who applied!

Lung cancer screening program now expanding

Eligible Albertans aged 50 to 74 who currently smoke or quit after smoking for many years can get screened for lung cancer through the Alberta Lung Cancer Screening Program. This two-year pilot project, which began in September 2022, will offer low-dose chest CT scans to approximately 3,000 at-risk individuals.

One in 13 Albertans will develop lung cancer in their lifetime, and more than 1,500 will die each year making lung cancer the leading cause of cancer deaths. Regular screening of high-risk asymptomatic individuals can lower the risk of dying from it by almost 25%.

Community Connections

This month, the following is available for your consideration:

Educational needs assessment of Canadian health care professionals on myalgic encephalomyelitis
This project is about health care providers’ education needs of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) in Canada. ME, formerly known as chronic fatigue syndrome (or ME/CFS), is a chronic, complex, multi-system disease that affects more than half a million Canadians. ME is rapidly becoming an even more severe public health concern because a significant subset of people living with Long COVID (post-acute sequelae SARS-CoV-2 infection) will meet the diagnostic criteria for ME. Take the survey.

This study has been reviewed and funded by the New Frontier ME Discovery Grant Program of the Interdisciplinary Canadian Collaborative for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. This project has been reviewed by the University of Sherbrooke Research Ethics Review (#2023-5027).

National survey of health care professionals' responses on domestic sex trafficking

Researchers at Women’s College Hospital are recruiting health care professionals for a national survey on domestic sex trafficking. The purpose of this 15–20-minute survey is to improve health care professionals' responses to sex trafficking cases. Participants will receive a $25 e-gift card upon survey completion. You do not need direct experience working with sex trafficked persons to participate. If you are interested, please contact sarahdaisy.kosa@wchospital.ca to determine your eligibility.
